Garden nature diary: October 2023
October 1
The conditions are still mild and a common frog is sitting on the vegetation in the patio water feature.
We haven’t had a starling in the garden for a few months, therefore it was good to see one feeding on the fat balls.
Late evening and a hedgehog was in the back garden.
October 3
Jay in flight over the garden towards the base of the valley.
October 4
Common frog in the patio water feature.
October 6
Male sparrowhawk flew in the garden, perching on the feeding station before flying off.
October 9
Flock of late evening long-tailed tits c.8 on the feeding station, mostly on the fat balls.
October 11
I haven’t seen a great spotted woodpecker for a while, good to have a male feeding on sunflower seeds today for a prolonged period of time.
October 14
Starling feeding on the fat ball feeder.
October 15
Single long-tailed tit feeding on fat in the morning.

We get regular visits from coal tits but invariably single birds.
Nice to see a pair on the feeding station.
October 20
Male sparrowhawk flew through the garden.
October 22
Haven’t seen a greenfinch in the garden for a while, nice to see one on the feeding station.
Male great spotted woodpecker is back daily again.
October 25
Regular coal tit visiting the feeding station. It takes a sunflower heart, goes to a shrub to eat it and then returns.
