A pike on the bank and a visit to the tip

In particularly heavy rain, I went fishing.

Even more so as I get older, I’m determined not to let the weather – or anything else for that matter – get in the way of living life to the full.

On a small pool, I was fishing a sprat and a small roach on size 4 trebles.

I enjoy float fishing for the pike and that will be my mode of attack until next March.

I cast the sprat towards the far bank, which with it being a small venue anyway, was just a gentle underarm flick.

With the roach though, I positioned it in several places during the session.

The first run saw the latter picked up by a pike of about half a pound, which let go as I brought it in.

The second one though, was hooked solid and you can see the fish in the accompanying video.

By the time I loaded the car I was very wet and muddy.

When I got home, after unloading the tackle I took four bags of gravel to the rubble section of the council tip.

It made sense before I showered and changed.

It’s all part of my current project at home, which is remodelling the area from the front to the back of the building itself.

My approach on this one is a marathon rather than a sprint.

It’s something that I’ll finish in a few weeks rather than hours.

  1. Hi Stewart, thoroughly enjoying your blogs and the accompanying videos, love the simplicity of how you fish and enjoy how the blogs cover wildlife and your radio slot and the sermons. Just a question regarding the pike fishing, do you use mono or braid for the main line.
    Thanks

    1. Hello, Matt.
Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated.
I use mono for pike fishing. I’m usually fishing quite close to the bank with a float so can’t see any real advantage if I used braid.

      1. Hi Stewert thank you for your reply, going fishing tomorrow so going to deadbait for pike. One last question in regards to float fishing for Roach Perch etc would you use a bigger float in deeper water ? I see you use a 0.8g for fairly shallow water

        Matt

        1. I tend to go for the smallest / lightest float in any situation but where there’s wind or more casting involved then would naturally need a bigger float.
          Tight lines tomorrow.
