June 1

A walk along the lane and through the woods to the main pool.

Mallards (3m, 2f) and a single moorhen on the pool.

Two separate sightings of single male bullfinches in trees around the pool.

June 3

A walk around the lower section of woodland on the eastern slope.

Lots of butterflies enjoying the bright sunny day with five species spotted.

orange-tip, common blue, small white, large white, speckled wood.

June 6

The regular mallards on the main pool (3m, 2f) but no sign of nesting. 

Single moorhen. 

Blue tit nesting site in a tree actually in the main pool, adult birds busy taking food to the chicks. 

June 8

There is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the valley.

My wife loves looking for rocks and fossils and there’s more in the video below.

June 10

Not many swifts around this year, one bird moving across the valley from west to east.

June 14

Two moorhens and five mallards (1m, 4f) on main pool.

Thousands of common frog tadpoles.

Red-headed cardinal beetle. 

June 16

Five swifts feeding over Straits estate above Sandyfields Road.

June 18

Sleeping with the windows open, due to the weather, heard both muntjac and roe deer first thing this morning in the valley.

June 22

Muntjac in woodland on western slope, late evening. Showing really well, feeding.

June 25

It was fantastic to watch a brook lamprey in one of the valley’s brooks.
