The Long Arm, filmed on location in London and some place in north Wales he can’t pronounce

There are some good old movies on Film 4, especially midweek during the day, and that’s where I watched The Long Arm.

A 1957 British black and white film, it stars Jack Hawkins as Superintendent Tom Halliday.

His wife, Mary, is played by Dorothy Alison.

Starting out with the police after a safe-cracker, it then develops into a murder hunt as well.

It’s filmed in London, where it’s great to see the city as it was then, and Snowdonia where the brief exchange below is spoken.

‘Where’s Ward off to?’

‘Some place in north Wales he can’t pronounce.’

An enjoyable film, then again aren’t they all.
