The early bird catches the perch on the canal
It’s nice to talk about angling on the radio but it’s even better to get out there and do it.
Without an alarm, I was up at first light with the dawn chorus in full swing.
I got dressed, made a flask of tea, loaded the car and in no time at all I was on my way to the local canal, which in my case is the Staffordshire/Worcestershire.
It’s essentially rural, so a very different proposition to urban canals in terms of aesthetics.
I targeted the boat channel with two red maggots on a size 14 hook beneath a small waggler.
Fishing over brown crumb and red maggots I caught three species of fish in a couple of hours or so – perch, roach and rudd.
A couple of the perch were decent, it’s always nice when my favourite species is big enough to hold in front of the camera with the dorsal fin showing.
