Cotwall End Valley nature diary – February 2023

February 13

Five mallards 4m, 1f on one of the woodland pools.

No moorhens there for some time, used to be several.

I’m thinking that a mink has passed through, certainly something has happened to them.

Four bullfinches 3m, 1f in a thicket on the western slope.

February 16

Great to see a moorhen on one of the woodland pools, along with mallards 5m, 3f.

On fields at the head of the valley (eastern slope) c.30 redwing and a single mistle thrush.

Two separate sightings of bullfinches in thickets on the western slope, 3m, 1f and 1m, 1f.

February 17

Late walk through the woods, hoping to see some early creatures of the night.

Five mallards 3m, 2f on main pool, as well as a single moorhen.

February 20

Seven mallards 4m, 3f on the main pool. Definitely paired-up as well, with two males squabbling over a female.
