Up bright and early this morning, I started the new month in the same way that I said farewell to the old one. On the bank of a Black Country canal.
You can follow the session via the video below. On the way back to the car, I saw my first foxglove of the year. In Welsh, that’s ffion, and it’s also a girl’s name. Remember Ffion Jenkins, who married William Hague?
I think it’s a lovely name; in fact there are many Welsh ones that also qualify, with Angharad, Bronwen, Fflur, Gwenllian, Rhiannon and Seren all coming immediately to mind.
Anyway, back to the angling session. I fished with the following tackle: Fox Barbel Specialist 11’ quiver tip rod and a Shimano DL2500FA reel.
The reel was loaded with 4lb Maxima Chameleon and this went straight through to a Drennan Super Specialist size 10 hook, which was attached via a blood knot.
A size 6 Dinsmores shot and a 5mm ESP shock bead created the six inch hook-length, with a 1/4 ounce bomb above the bead.
I fished worm and loose fed red maggots. I was near a lock initially and then moved along to cast three rod lengths out into the boat channel and open water.
Hi Stewart. Using worm do you not attract the attention of eels?. Have a great June
Hello, David. Not a problem in the day. There are a few eels in the canal, as I’ve targeted them before, but during darkness, or at least late dusk. You too.
