A decent eel, thousands of small roach and, in spite of the weather, the angling show rolls on

I’m more than happy to still be catching during this very cold spell.

With pools, ponds and lakes totally frozen, there are just small sections of canal free at the moment.

Where there is water movement – overflows next to locks, for example – the ice is kept at bay.

Locks in themselves are great fish-holding features, but if you can throw in a bridge, overhanging vegetation or something similar, then you are in with a great chance.

Returning to the canal that I was on yesterday, there was an eel just a few feet from the bank.
