With pools, ponds and lakes totally frozen, there are just small sections of canal free at the moment.
Where there is water movement – overflows next to locks, for example – the ice is kept at bay.
Locks in themselves are great fish-holding features, but if you can throw in a bridge, overhanging vegetation or something similar, then you are in with a great chance.
Returning to the canal that I was on yesterday, there was an eel just a few feet from the bank.
