Fishing the Severn in Wales and a very pleasant surprise before I even cast a line

I set up just upstream of an overhanging tree, which is at such an angle it’s growing into the river.

I’ve done quite well on this spot in the past, which is why I chose it.

On the back of three blanks, I was hoping to get some fish on the bank this time.

I legered (1/4 ounce bomb) two maggots on a size 12 hook, allowing the bait to settle under the tree.

It’s also perfect pike territory and in the past I’ve had predator issues when fishing here.

The obvious feature on the stretch though, that’s what I went for.
