🐦⬛ Garden nature diary: the natural world on my doorstep
September 1: Seven adult and juvenile chaffinches on the lawn. Numerous visits throughout the day, with both male and female birds. Adult greenfinches, goldfinches. Juvenile greenfinches. Male blackbird.
September 2: Stock doves on the lawn, two sightings of single birds. A darker plumage bird later in the day. Juvenile blue tits, great tits, greenfinches, goldfinches. Four magpies visited together, a regular family group for a while, although the birds are all the same size now.
September 3: Adult goldfinches, adult female chaffinch. Five juvenile chaffinches. Female house sparrow. Five juvenile greenfinches. Stock dove on the lawn.
September 4: Dark plumage and standard stock dove both in the garden at the same time. Very noticeable difference. Juvenile goldfinches, chaffinches, greenfinches great tits, blue tits and a dunnock. Female house sparrow.
September 5: Stock dove on the lawn early morning. Four magpies. Several small whites. One large white. Juvenile goldfinch, blue tits, great tits. Adult greenfinch, goldfinches, female chaffinch. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder.
September 6: Stock dove on the lawn. Female house sparrow. Wren on the patio. Juvenile greenfinches (at least three), goldfinch, blue tits, wood pigeon. Two calling ravens passed over our home.
September 7: Three magpies in the garden. As always, lots of juvenile blue tits and great tits visiting the feeding station. Coal tit, haven’t seen one for a while. Chaffinches, greenfinches and goldfinches, with both adults and juveniles of each.
September 8: Numerous juvenile and adult chaffinches, greenfinches and goldfinches on the feeding station at the same time. So many birds (double-figures) they were squabbling for feeding points. Juvenile blackbird. On the drive and I heard it first, looked up and saw a ring-necked parakeet heading towards the western ridge.
September 9: Several adult and juvenile chaffinches. Juvenile blue tits and great tits. Stock dove on the lawn. Small white.
September 10: Pair of ravens in flight over the valley. Four magpies around the feeding station. Stock dove on the lawn. Heard several vocal tawny owls in the immediate area when I went to bed.
September 11: Pair of stock doves on the lawn. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder, a regular.
September 12: Two magpies around the feeding station in the morning, three later in the day, followed by a group of four, with six early evening, topped off by nine. Grey heron in flight along the valley. Family group of 6 goldfinches on the feeding station.
September 13: Several small whites enjoying the morning sunshine, before the weather turned. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder. At least six adult and juvenile chaffinches in the garden.
September 14: Lots of juveniles around the feeding station: Greenfinches, goldfinches, chaffinches, magpies, blue tits and great tits.
September 15: Calling raven very low in flight over Longfellow, seen from the garden.
September 16: Three single bird stock dove visits on the lawn. In with the numerous adult wood pigeons, a very young juvenile. Small white.
September 17: Four magpies around the feeding station. Two sightings of a single stock dove on the lawn, plus a pair of birds, and two singles that arrived within five minutes of each other. Six chaffinches (adults and juveniles) on the lawn. Four juvenile greenfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder at the same time. Flock of wood pigeons c.70 in low flight, heading to woodland below our bungalow.
September 18: Green woodpecker over fields beyond Wordsworth, seen from the drive. Wood pigeons displaying on the garden fence. Six adult and juvenile chaffinches. Three juvenile greenfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder. Pair of calling ravens flew low, directly over our bungalow. Small white. Several single stock dove visits, as well as two together both arrived at different times.
September 19: Pair of stock doves on the lawn, single bird later. Several small whites. Female house sparrow on the seed feeder.
September 20: Three calling ravens low in flight, heading towards the western ridge and seen from the drive, early morning, with two in late evening. Chaffinches c.8 on the lawn, adults and juveniles. Stock dove on the lawn. Female house sparrow on seed feeder.
September 21: Juvenile greenfinches, chaffinches, blue tits, great tits on the feeding station.
September 22: Not able to identify but a brief glimpse of a butterfly that passed through the garden. Possibly a small tortoiseshell. Two soaring ravens over woodland, seen from the bungalow.
September 23: Calling raven heard from the living room, looking out the window I saw five ravens in flight, heading into the woodland below our home. Stock dove on the lawn.
September 24: Two calling jackdaws, seen in flight from the garden. Stock dove below the feeding station. Juvenile greenfinches and goldfinches on the sunflower hearts feeder.
September 25: Lots of adult chaffinches, goldfinches and greenfinches continue to visit the feeding station.
September 26: Coal tit on the feeding station. Several magpie visits, most seen at one time was three.
September 27: Stock dove in the garden. Lesser black-backed gulls in local area, seen from the garden.
September 28: From the drive: Raven calling and four black-headed gulls, all in flight. Two calling ravens in low flight directly over our home.
September 29: First autumn appearance of the long-tailed tits c.10 on the feeding station late evening. Stock dove on the lawn. Juvenile wood pigeon on the lawn.
September 30: Coal tit on the sunflower hearts feeder. Female chaffinch, greenfinches on the feeding station. Stock dove on the lawn.
