Although it’s based in Edwardian London (1910), the Walt Disney musical was filmed exclusively in California.
The London scenes were painted backgrounds so, in that sense, as authentically British as Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent.
Julie Andrews didn’t need to put on a home accent though because, like the majority of the cast, she was born in London.
Both Van Dyke and Andrews are still alive, at the ages of 97 and 87 respectively.
The fantasy musical is a classic and I can remember watching it as a child.
The songs ‘A spoonful of sugar’, ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ are all instantly recognisable even today.
