Jim Bridger (played by Van Heflin) was a real person, who was able to trace his American roots back to the early colonists.

In the movie he plays the good guy.

It was one of the first films that portrayed the native Americans in a positive way.

They wanted peace but were betrayed by the United States government.

I always look for moral lessons in movies and, invariably, they are there to be found.
