Second Time Around And A Wiwer Goch Puts In An Appearance

Wiwer goch, by the way, is the Welsh name for the red squirrel.

Anglesey is the stronghold for the species in Wales and especially Newborough Forest / Coedwig Niwbwrch.

The grey squirrel has been absent from the island for a few years now, which is good news for our native red.

I’m not sure if any have returned, it’s always possible across a bridge to the mainland.

I’m sure the authorities are on top of things though. The problem is the greys are bigger and push the reds out. In addition, they carry a deadly virus.

Grey squirrels are not native to our shores, it is an invasive species that originates in North America.
