Without doubt, it’s an exceptionally cold spell that we find ourselves in at present.
However, as far as angling is concerned, the reality is that as long as your bait’s in the water, you have a chance.
I’ve been using that saying for years, and several times people have said that to me when I’ve been fishing and they’ve walked past.
I’ve even got signed football memorabilia items where the player has put those words on.
It’s more than just a catchphrase though, it’s true.
This morning, after clearing the ice from the car, I headed for a small brook.
It’s very close to the source and has a good head of three-spined sticklebacks, which happen to be one of my favourite species.
It was just a short session and you can watch more via the video.
I ended the visit with five fish on the bank and I was certainly happy with that.
Five sticklebacks caught by design.
I saw a fox while I was fishing, as it made its way along the far bank, totally oblivious to my presence.
Angling puts you very much at the heart of the natural world and it’s always great to engage with what’s out there.
The tackle I fished with was as follows:
Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel.
Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon, leading to Ultima Virage 1lb 6oz fluorocarbon, joined by a loop-to-loop knot.
There was a size 6 shot about six inches from the hook.
The hook was a Drennan Super Specialist size 18 with a single white maggot as bait.
I use a white maggot as it stands out better in the water.
In the video I made reference to the imminent announcement by the Welsh First Minister.
That’s now been made and the good news is that football will now be back on from next week in the country.
