I was up while it was still dark this morning, and with a layer of ice everywhere, it took longer to clear the car windows than it did to drive to the pool.
Having said that, I’m only three minutes away by car. That’s what you need when you fish a lot, but you have other things in your life, including a full-time job.
When conditions are like today, it’s important to give yourself the maximum opportunity in terms of getting fish on the bank.
It’s no good going for crucian carp, rudd or tench. Leave those for the spring onwards.
Even though I was targeting roach, I still only caught one fish.
Nevertheless, it was one that kept me on the right side of the line, which in the general conditions that we’re in at the moment, was an achievement.

The tackle used was as follows:
Greys Prodigy 12’ rod and a Shimano 3500 reel loaded with Maxima Chameleon 4lb line.
There was 4 feet length of 3lb 8oz Drennan Team England joined by a loop-to-loop knot.
The float was a 0.6g Drennan Crystal Waggler.
The hook was a Drennan Super Specialist size 18.
I fished two rod lengths out in four feet of water over brown crumb and mixed maggots.
