What do you do when there’s a football game on at the same time that you want to tick birds in the garden to get your year list underway?
The answer is, you do both. Sitting in my chair at home, the television and the patio doors are both in a direct line as far as vision is concerned.
I’ve become so accustomed to watching television and spotting birds simultaneously that it’s natural and seamless.
The birds seen, in order of appearance, were:
magpie, wood pigeon (adult, juvenile), blue tit, great tit (m, f), chaffinch (m, f), stock dove, dunnock, blackbird (m), robin, goldfinch, long-tailed tit, collared dove, great spotted woodpecker (f), house sparrow (m)
I also saw a grey squirrel as well, so the first mammal of the year.

By the way, if you wonder what the background noise is at the start of the video, it’s my dog eating, as his collar tag catches the bowl!
