One of the benefits of working in football is that you get to see a lot more than the average fan. That was the case this time at The Oval, the home of Glentoran FC, in Northern Ireland.
Ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League game with The New Saints, I was at the stadium with the team as they trained.
I was not only able to film behind the scenes, as I usually do, but while talking to Ricky Rea, the club secretary about the history on display, he asked me if I wanted a tour of the boardroom.
Is the Pope a Catholic.
Although the club’s located in a strong unionist area, maybe not something you would verbalise on the streets, but you know what I mean.
Joking aside, though, I do love football history and the boardroom itself is packed with items that go back over many decades.
In the video, Ricky goes through some of the photographs and trophies and gives more background, including references to George Best.
The welcome that we received from Glentoran was very warm and friendly and certainly, on a personal level, very much appreciated indeed.
