Rubbish On The Surface But It’s Underneath What Counts – Today’s Urban Canal Angling Adventure

The more urban you get, sadly the more the canal becomes a dumping ground for unwanted items. With cans, bottles and general rubbish, this morning’s session wasn’t particularly pleasing on the eye.

Throw in the leaves, which are natural, so less of an issue aesthetically speaking, it was a case of dropping the bait through the cluttered surface and on the bed of the canal itself.

There were clear areas, of course, but I wanted to fish alongside a lock that isn’t in use. It’s about searching out the fish-holding areas, especially during the colder months of the year.

The water temperature readings are all over the place at the moment, there’s very little consistency. Today’s was 8C.

No perch today, which were my target species, although roach came to the rescue, as you can see from the images on this page.

Another hour at first light, these sessions are suiting me very much at the moment. They mean that I can get some fishing in and even if it’s just a short trip, I’m happy with that.

I fished with a Greys G Lite spinning rod (4-8lb) and a Shimano DL2500FA reel.

Maxima Chameleon 4lb line went straight through to a Drennan Super Specialist size 16 hook.

The hook length was created by a 5mm bead and a size 6 shot. The lead was a 1/4 ounce bomb.

I fished with double red maggot and fed brown crumb and mixed maggots.
