In terms of popularity, fishing for three-spined sticklebacks is not exactly going to get you lots of clicks, views or likes.
However, when it comes to angling, unless you’re producing commercial blog entries, fish for what you want.
That’s exactly what I do, and for a while now I’ve been drawn to small brooks, in pursuit of one of our mini-species. I’m loving it.
The tackle I fished with was as follows: Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel.
Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon, leading to Ultima Virage 2lb 8oz fluorocarbon, joined by a loop-to-loop knot.
I usually go for 1lb 6oz Virage but as the line was already set up from a previous session, I kept that. On this venue it doesn’t make any real difference.
I nipped a size 4 shot on the line and the hook was a Drennan Super Specialist micro barbed size 18. Bait was a single white maggot.
