After a successful period with The Miracles, Smokey Robinson embarked on an equally impressive solo career.
However, it’s true to say that, as far as chart statistics are concerned, he was far more popular in the USA than this side of the water.
Kicking off in 1973, he has since registered thirty-three Stateside chart appearances, with just six in the UK, and that includes the Four Tops’ Indestructible, which he featured on.
However, although he has never had a number one in his home nation, Being With You hit the peak here, topping the charts in June, 1981.
As far as I’m concerned, there are numerous tracks that I enjoy. Whittling it down though, it has to be either Theme From Big Time, Part 1 or Just My Soul Responding.
It is as close as tossing a coin, but I think I’ll go for the former, as I remember buying that as a single back in 1977.
It didn’t chart in either the UK or the USA, but one thing my own musical path has taught me, is don’t worry about popularity and sales. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

Smokey Robinson , known to his parents as William could sing the Detroit phone directory and make it soulful. Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan called him America’s `greatest living poet`
Yes, he’s great isn’t he. Such an important part of the Motown legacy – singer, songwriter and executive.
He also followed me on Twitter, which was a pleasant surprise!
Perhaps he watches your YouTube videoes Stewart, maybe he is a fisherman? Yes, you can imagine as well as being a great talent you would imagine him as a decent human being.
Probably less exciting and personal, I think. Although I didn’t tag him, I had previously mentioned his name in a tweet.
I think he had just searched his name and followed people because the figure of follows was quite high.
Still nice though, even though not personal.
