Super Stickleback Saturday – A Monster Fish From A Wild, Overgrown Brook

I fancied doing some small brook fishing today and, with sticklebacks on my mind, I targeted a waterway that I have fished recently.

The short session was captured on video, and for those who like the longer ones, hopefully this will hit the spot.

The best fish, which is a cracker, is the one in the lead image above. Especially when you consider the venue that it came from, it’s a monster. A fantastic session, indeed.

I’m seriously considering getting some scales to weigh the mini-species, as there are records waiting to be broken, for sure.

You can comment below and, as always, I look forward to hearing from you. Plus, there are social media buttons on the page, so if you like a particular blog entry, why not share it?

The tackle I fished with was as follows: Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel. Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon, leading to Ultima Virage 1lb 6oz fluorocarbon, joined by a loop-to-loop knot.

I nipped a size 4 shot on the line and the hook was a Drennan Super Specialist micro barbed size 18. Bait was a single red maggot.

  1. Hi Stewart, fellow stickleback angler here. I‘m from Germany and a friend directed me to your YT channel. I also love exploring tiny brooks, neglected puddles and other places none else will fish.
    Take care and enjoy!

    1. Hello, Jan. That’s great!
I know exactly where you’re coming from.
      Tight lines!

  2. PS – interesting you mentioned Hampton Loade. I used to go there when u was a kid ( early 80s) with my pond dipping net. It is where I caught minnows and stone Loach.

    1. Yes, I just threw that in as a random example. I do fish there though, so natural that it should be on my mind.

  3. Hello Stewart,

Another great blog and video. That larger stickleback was quite large; looked 3” long or so. It looked like a small perch!

Anyway, I really enjoy the mini species blogs. Keep them going, I’m sure you will !

    Regards
    Mark

    1. Hello, Mark. I measured my hand at home and the space it occupied is almost 3.5 inches long.
Indeed I will, enjoying fishing for them very much.
