I enjoyed my recent stickleback sessions very much and it was good to be back in pursuit of the species.
Due to circumstances beyond my control though, the conditions weren’t as before. I still managed a fish though.

The tackle I fished with was as follows: Poachers Pocket mini-rod and reel. Reel line was 4lb Maxima Chameleon, leading to Ultima Virage 1lb 6oz fluorocarbon, joined by a loop-to-loop knot.
The float was hand-made and the hook was a Drennan Super Specialist micro barbed size 18. Bait was a single red maggot.

Hi Stewart, I really enjoy the mini species blogs. Good to see minnows and sticklebacks getting a bit of positive media. I’m not an angler but am interested in wildlife in general.
Out of interest, have you gone to any places with 9/10 spined sticklebacks? I think earlier in the month ( another mini species blog reply) I did mention That I once caught sticklebacks with minnows in the Avon at Evesham. That day I netted and 9/10 spined one along with three spined ones and minnows.
I also netted (in a pond dipping way) Stone Loach and Bullhead once at Hampton Loade on the Severn enough in a quite pebbly shallows.
Any plans for a blog netting loaches and/or bull heads? They’re great little fish.

All the sticklebacks I’ve located so far have been three-spined. I’d love to find the others though.
I’ve targeted – and caught – bullhead before from a particular brook.
There is another tiny brook on the immediate radar. I was there some time ago just walking along and I saw sticklebacks and what looked like loach.
I wasn’t sure but I will be fishing it very soon.

Talking of mini fish, if not species, I’ve pond dipped and netted young Perch at Chasewater and a small stickleback- sized Pike at Sandwell Valley. Needless to say, they went back in their waters.
