After A Couple Of Crucian Blanks, More Fish In Two Hours Than I’ve Caught All Month So Far

An afternoon in the sun next to a Shropshire pond. Sounds like heaven on earth doesn’t it? With hordes of tiny rudd in the pond, the bright sunshine wasn’t a problem as far as the fishing was concerned.

I was on the Nordley complex, which is on the Birmingham Anglers Association card. Situated between Bridgnorth and Broseley, there are six pools in total.

The first four are bigger, while five and six much smaller and more intimate. It was the former that I fished and you can see more of the pool via the video below.

It was action all the way, and although I didn’t need the landing net once, it was great fun. I’ve fished Nordley since the mid-nineties and it’s certainly a great place to visit if you’re a pleasure angler.

The rod I fished with was a 12’ Greys Prodigy TX and the reel was a Shimano DL2500FA, loaded with 4lb Maxima Chameleon.

Joined by a loop-to-loop knot, there was a five feet length of Ultra Virage fluorocarbon 2.5lb line to a Drennan Super Specialist size 14 hook.

The float was a Drennan 3BB crystal waggler, with most of the shot around the float, so that the bait dropped more naturally through the water.

All the fish were caught on double red maggot and I fed the same along with corn and brown crumb. I did fish occasionally with corn but didn’t get a touch.

I had a dense bed of reeds alongside my swim and fished a metre off those into three feet of water. The rudd were taken mostly into open water while the perch generally were closer to the vegetation.

  1. Hi Stuart I’ve fished pool no6 at Nordley a couple times resentley, there is quite a lot of weed but always catch lot of Rudd fishing shallow to avoid the weed. I think I am the only one that fishes that pool but it is very peaceful and intimate. Keep up the good work with the blogs and videos very inspiring.
    Thanks Alan

    1. Nice one, Alan. I almost went for pool six funnily enough, but settled on five in the end.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
