As more and more Welsh clubs have embraced the artificial pitch revolution, the days of ‘rain stopped play’ have become few and far between, as least as far as top flight football is concerned anyway.
However, when the snow falls that can be a different ball game altogether. Even though the modern surface can handle many things that its natural grass counterpart can’t, nevertheless a dumping of snow will ultimately have an effect.
It’s not just about the pitch either, as in these days health and safety dominates, and even though you can clear the surface so that a game can take place, it’s as much about what happens off it as on it.
The lead image was taken at Park Hall, when the JD Cymru Premier MD14 game between The New Saints FC and Carmarthen Town was postponed. It was a late one as well, with the snow catching everyone out.
I drove across Shropshire and it was only when I got within the final couple of miles or so that I encountered snow. Going back in time, the 2014 Boxing day clash with Cefn Druids at Park Hall started totally dry.
However, by the time we reached the 63rd minute, the referee blew for the final time as that time snow actually did stop play.
