September 1

A late afternoon walk across the golf course.

Green woodpecker (species 65 of the year) and a pair of mistle thrushes feeding on the fairway.

Long-tailed tits (c.12) in flight along a hedgerow.

September 2

Another walk along the golf course on the western slope.

Six lesser black-backed gulls and two mistle thrushes on the fairway.

Starlings (c.40) on Straits estate in flight.

September 3

Another walk along the golf course, this time in the morning.

Grey heron in flight and a female lesser spotted woodpecker on a tree.

September 4

Two swallows in flight (east to west) across the golf course.

Female sparrowhawk over the valley.

September 5

The resident lesser black-backed gull on the telegraph pole in Longfellow Road, near the junction with Wordsworth Road.

September 8

The lesser black-backed gull on the telegraph pole in the evening. Calling.

September 9

Morning walk along the golf course.

Three flocks of goldfinches between five and seven birds.
Swallow in flight from east to west across the golf course
Two ravens soaring, mobbed by two carrion crows.

September 10

The first swifts of September and possibly the last of the year?

Two birds in migration flight heading south over Tennyson Road.

September 11

Swift in flight (east to west) across the valley.

Female sparrowhawk and green woodpecker seen on estate during evening walk.

September 13

Morning walk along the golf course. Eight magpies and six black-headed gulls on the fairway.

Afternoon walk around the estate. Female sparrowhawk, green woodpecker, small white.

September 16

Four small whites seen on a walk around the estate.

September 19

Large white seen from Straits Road.

September 22

Lesser black-backed gull on the telegraph pole in Longfellow Road again.

It’s there every evening, regardless of the weather.

September 23

Walking along Kipling Road and two calling oystercatchers in flight from west to east.

The first ever for the valley.

September 24

Flock of 27 starlings on rooftops and aerials on Straits Road.

September 25

Walk along Sandyfields Road on the western ridge.

Male kestrel hovering. Female kestrel perched.

Jay in flight across Milton Crescent into woodland alongside the golf course.

September 26

Butterfly on the green. Not able to identify but dark and red admiral size.
